Ultimate Retention Device (URD)

During searches and low light tactical situations, there is an obvious need for additional lighting means via a hand held flashlight. Up until now, the method of retention has been primarily a lanyard that dangles randomly from the wrist. This lanyard poses potential problems of tangling and catching on equipment as well as an adversary grabbing the lanyard and causing possible injury to the operator.

The Ultimate Retention Device is designed to rapidly mount to almost any flashlight from any manufacturer with a flashlight body diameter from about 20mm to 25 mm. This range encompasses just about every small hand held light in the market. There are no tools required and it can be removed in seconds if desired. No set screws or damaging hardware is used.

The Ultimate Retention Device is an injection molded rubber “8” with 2 holes molded into it. The rubber gives the product “predictable flexibility”. One hole houses an interchangeable plastic finger sizing insert (3 sizes are included). The plastic inserts allows proper sizing for the finger as well as providing a slippery surface for the product to rotate on the finger. The second hole is for inserting the flashlight body. This is a tight friction fit between the rubber molding and the flashlight body.

Once in place, the flashlight is secured on the index finger and tactical transitions from hand over hand, search, index finger middle finger fat of thumb operations of the light are possible. The operator is also free to change magazines while the light is still retained, simply by “flipping” the light and rotating the device on the sizing insert. Tactical transition times are greatly shortened with the added safety benefit of maintaining flashlight retention. As an added bonus, with the device attached, the light will not roll off of an inclined surface when the light is set down thus minimizing lost flashlights.
